Gombe L-PRES Establish 20-Hectare Pasture Field for Diary Production, Plans Water Reticulation from River Gongola to Diary Facility
Reinforcing Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya's commitment to livestock transformation, the Gombe State Government, through the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, has commenced the establishment of a 20-hectare pasture cultivation field to support an integrated dairy production system and advance sustainable dairy development in Gombe State.The initiative forms part of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya's strategic investments in modernising the livestock sector through sustainable dairy production, value addition and agribusiness development.The State Project Coordinator of Gombe L-PRES, Professor Usman Bello Abubakar, disclosed this while leading a multidisciplinary technical team on an assessment tour of the proposed dairy production facility in Nabawa community, Yamaltu-Deba Local Government Area.According to him, the visit followed an earlier stakeholder engagement with the host community during which the boundaries of the proposed dairy production facility were jointly re-established through consultation and consensus.Professor Abubakar explained that after receiving the committee's report, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya directed that an existing cattle route be preserved to guarantee unhindered livestock movement and safeguard the interests of surrounding communities.He further revealed that, rather than constructing a water dam as initially proposed, the Governor approved a more sustainable plan to reticulate water directly from the Upper River Gongola to provide a reliable water supply for the dairy facility.The Coordinator assured that all farmlands and other properties affected by the project would be duly assessed and compensated in accordance with established procedures, reaffirming the administration's commitment to protecting the interests of host communities.Professor Abubakar disclosed that, in addition to the dairy production facility, the project would establish a 20-hectare pasture cultivation field to guarantee year-round availability of quality fodder for dairy cattle, thereby enhancing milk production and overall productivity.A technical team which consisted of representative from the office of the State Surveyor-General, pasture development specialist, Other Technical staff conducted on-the-spot inspection of the proposed dairy facility, the pasture development site and the Upper River Gongola corridor identified for the planned water reticulation project.The team also conducted preliminary assessments, including topographical surveys, geophysical investigations and pasture suitability studies, while identifying viable routes for water reticulation from the Upper River Gongola.Speaking during the visit, the Emir of Yamaltu, His Royal Highness Alhaji Abubakar Aliyu, commended Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for his unwavering commitment to livestock development and praised the Gombe L-PRES Project for bringing the landmark investment to the area.The royal father described the initiative as a major catalyst for economic growth, job creation and wealth generation, noting that it would not only benefit the host community but also stimulate development across Yamaltu-Deba Local Government Area, Gombe State and beyond.He pledged the full support and cooperation of the traditional institution and host communities towards the successful implementation of the project, while urging residents to give the project the necessary support.Upon completion, the integrated dairy production facility will comprise a dairy farm, pasture production fields, modern milking facilities, milk storage and transportation infrastructure, with products transported to a processing plant for value addition.The project forms part of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya's broader livestock transformation agenda aimed at modernising the sector, creating employment opportunities, strengthening the dairy value chain and positioning Gombe State as a leading hub for livestock production and agribusiness in Nigeria.
