GSU Hails Initiative, Assures Long-Term Sustainability of Facility<\/div><\/div>
In a major milestone towards accelerating livestock transformation in Gombe State, the Gombe State Government, under the leadership of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, has commenced the construction of a multi-million naira Artificial Insemination and Breed Multiplication Centre at the Faculty of Agriculture, Gombe State University, Malam Sidi.<\/div><\/div>
The facility, being implemented through the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, is designed to advance modern livestock breeding, strengthen research and innovation, improve dairy and beef production, and enhance farmers' productivity and incomes as part of the state's livestock transformation agenda.<\/div><\/div>
Speaking during the site handover ceremony, the State Project Coordinator of Gombe L-PRES, Professor Usman Bello Abubakar, described the centre as a landmark investment that will revolutionise livestock breeding, improve dairy production and enhance the profitability of livestock farming in Gombe State.<\/div><\/div>
He observed that many livestock farmers still rely on traditional breeding practices, resulting in low productivity, prolonged calving intervals and poor economic returns.<\/div><\/div>
According to him, the introduction of artificial insemination will significantly improve reproductive efficiency, increase milk yields and produce superior breeds capable of generating higher incomes for livestock farmers.<\/div><\/div>
\"With improved genetics and proper management, farmers can move from producing barely one litre of milk daily to 20, 30 or even 40 litres, depending on the breed and feeding regime,\" he said.<\/div><\/div>
Professor Abubakar explained that the long-term sustainability of the intervention informed the decision to establish the facility at Gombe State University, noting that the institution possesses the research capacity, academic expertise and institutional framework required to sustain such specialised programmes beyond the lifespan of the L-PRES Project.<\/div><\/div>
He said the centre would serve as a hub for research, innovation, manpower development and practical training for undergraduate and postgraduate students, while attracting national and international partnerships in livestock production and animal breeding.<\/div><\/div>
The Coordinator disclosed that the facility would be equipped with state-of-the-art technologies for artificial insemination, breed improvement and embryo transfer, comparable to those deployed in leading livestock-producing countries.<\/div><\/div>
He added that the initiative was inspired by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya's study visits to countries such as New Zealand, where modern breeding technologies have significantly transformed dairy production.<\/div><\/div>
Professor Abubakar further revealed that the centre would complement the state's ongoing Artificial Insemination Programme, under which Gombe L-PRES has established 55 dairy farmers' cooperative societies, provided capacity building and established milk collection centres across the state.<\/div><\/div>
He announced that following the successful insemination of over 1,000 cows during the first phase of the programme, Gombe L-PRES would commence a second phase targeting an additional 2,500 cows across the state within the next few weeks.<\/div><\/div>
Professor Abubakar noted that the programme has become one of the flagship successes of the national L-PRES Project, attracting the attention of the World Bank, which has recommended Gombe's Artificial Insemination Programme as a model for adoption by other participating states owing to its measurable impact on livestock productivity and genetic improvement.<\/div><\/div>
He expressed confidence that the new centre would evolve into a regional centre of excellence for livestock breeding, research and extension services, providing farmers with sustained access to quality breeding technologies long after the completion of the L-PRES Project.<\/div><\/div>
The Coordinator charged the contractor to execute the project strictly in accordance with approved specifications and complete it within the six-month delivery period, assuring that the facility would be fully equipped and operational immediately after completion.<\/div><\/div>
Responding on behalf of the university management, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of Gombe State University, Professor Rasheed Abdulghaniyyu, described the project as another demonstration of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya's commitment to agricultural education and livestock transformation.<\/div><\/div>
He noted that the facility would strengthen teaching, research and manpower development in agriculture and livestock production, while positioning Gombe State University as a regional centre of excellence for animal breeding, research and innovation.<\/div><\/div>
Professor Abdulghaniyyu also appreciated the Gombe L-PRES Project, the World Bank and the Ministry of Agriculture for the collaboration, assuring that the university would provide the institutional support required to guarantee the facility's long-term sustainability.<\/div><\/div>
He urged the contractor to deliver the project in strict compliance with approved specifications and within the stipulated six-month timeframe, stressing that the centre must meet the highest standards to effectively serve students, researchers and livestock farmers for generations to come.<\/div><\/div>
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary and Overseer of the Gombe State Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperatives, Builder Ahmad Sa'id Guli, represented by the Director of Agricultural Services, Ibrahim Sajo, described the project as a strategic investment that aligns with the ministry's mandate of promoting agricultural transformation and livestock development.<\/div><\/div>
He commended Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for supporting the establishment of the Faculty of Agriculture and the siting of the centre at Gombe State University, while applauding Gombe L-PRES for partnering with the university to strengthen research, innovation and manpower development in the livestock sector.<\/div><\/div>
He urged the contractor to adhere strictly to the approved specifications and encouraged livestock farmers across the state to take advantage of the facility to improve productivity and profitability.<\/div><\/div>
Also speaking, the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Gombe State University and Chairman of the Project Steering Committee, Professor Abdullahi B. Alhassan, described the centre as a landmark investment in livestock education and research.<\/div><\/div>
He commended Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, the World Bank and the Gombe L-PRES Project for making the initiative a reality, assuring that the faculty would leverage its academic expertise to ensure the facility is effectively utilised for teaching, research, innovation and community engagement.<\/div><\/div>
Representing the contracting firm, Horizon Interlinks Nigeria Limited, Dr. Sani Musa pledged to deliver the project in strict compliance with approved specifications, professional standards and the agreed completion schedule.<\/div><\/div>
Upon completion, the multi-million naira Artificial Insemination and Breed Multiplication Centre will comprise a modern main complex, perimeter fencing and ancillary infrastructure, alongside state-of-the-art equipment for artificial insemination, embryo transfer and other advanced breeding technologies.<\/div><\/div>The facility is expected to serve as a hub for livestock genetics, research, extension services and manpower development, further positioning Gombe State as a leading centre for modern livestock breeding and dairy development in Nigeria. <\/span><\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
